11.27.05 - 2005 NRHA Futurity - Craig Schmersal Takes the Lead

In the first go round, third section of the 2005 NRHA Futurity Open Division, newly designated NRHA Million Dollar Rider Craig Schmersal scored a 223.5 and moved into the leader’s position. Craig rode Wrangle Whiz, a three-year-old stallion by Topsail Whiz and out of Wranglers Gay Bar owned by Timorie Budge, Laguna Niguel, California.

There is now a three-way tie for second place between Shawn Flarida riding KR Lil Conquistador (Conquistador Whiz x Smart Little Prize) owned by Cheree Kirkbride, Randy Paul riding Jill Smiekel-George’s Smokeelan (Elans Playboy x Smart Little Smokee) and Guenter Bosner’s Great King Pine (Earl Be Nimble x Echoing Piney [AQHA Bobs Poco Echo]) ridden by NRHA’s Leading Lifetime Money Earner, Tim McQuay.

The Intermediate Open Division standings remained the same at the end of the day. Tanya Jenkins is still the leader with a 222.5 earned on Las Cruces Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Shining Bubbles) owned by Manntana LLC. Casey Hinton’s score of 218 on Tom and Betty Donato’s Paid By Corona (Paid By Chic x Hobbys Bonney Boss) stood the test and is still worth second place.

There are two new leaders on the Futurity Limited Open leader board. Sam Schaffhauser, riding his own Chic N Roost (Gallo Del Cielo x Dun Maid By Chic), scored a 217.5 and Stefano Calcagnini scored a 216 on Julie Amabile’s Gun Dealer (Gunner [APHA Colonels Smokingun] x Peppy Oak [AQHA Docs Peppy Oak RB]) to slide into second place.

The fourth section competes on Sunday, November, 27 and that will complete the entire NRHA Futurity Open Division first go round. The second go round begins on Monday, November, 28 at 7:00 am.

Quincy Cahill Allen scored a 216.5 on The Dualster (Mister Dual Pep x Nicacheka) to move into the lead in the Cinch/NRHA Non Pro Futurity. Quincy and her husband, Dustin, own this talented three-year-old. Trish Fappani remains in the hunt sitting in second place aboard her Lean Olena (Lean With Me x BR Little Badger) with a score of 215.

Bernie Paetzel maintained his lead in the Intermediate Non Pro Division on his Toriana Dun It (Mr Tori Kid x Dunits Reining Heir). Bernie scored a 214.5. Kyle Johnson scored a 214 to move into second place aboard his Reeboks Rerun (Reeboks Kid x Workmans Fisty). Kyle and Reeboks Rerun went to the head of the class in the Limited Non Pro Division while Matt Armenta’s 214 aboard his Sweet Magnum Dream (Magnum Chic Dream x JS Sweet N Low) moved him down to second place.

This is the 40th Anniversary of the NRHA Futurity, the National Reining Horse Association’s premier event for three-year-old reining horses. There are wonderful activities planned to celebrate the occasion including special presentations and awards, three fabulous sales, and the Clinton Anderson Clinic with six time NRHA Futurity Champion Bob Loomis will be held on Saturday, December 3 at 10:00 am. The Open Division Finals are slated for Saturday evening. The winner is guaranteed a $125,000 pay day.

Come to the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, visit the numerous vendors, enjoy the special exhibits and video presentations, celebrate Forty Fabulous Futurities and enjoy a first class show.
