« 11.26.04 - THE 39TH NRHA FUTURITY IS UNDER WAY! 11.28.04 - Open Futurity Riders Turn Up the Heat »

11.27.04 - FIRST GO-ROUND, SECOND SECTION RAISES THE BAR

While the weather held in OKC, the high score of 219 in the first go round, first section of the 39th NRHA Futurity didn’t.  Bub Poplin had the judge’s pencils flying with his dynamic run on Starlights Starbrite owned by the Gately Living Trust, which earned a 221.  Poplin tested this son of Grays Starlight out of Melody Lena three times before hauling to OKC and this colt passed those tests with flying colors.  He won the Intermediate Open Futurity in Rocky Mountain Summer Slide, Denver, Colorado, where he placed second in the Open Division.  Then, he won Open Futurity divisions at the Western Slope Slide in Grand Junction, Colorado, the Scottsdale Classic Futurity, Arizona, and the 7th Annual Utah Classic Futurity in South Jordan.

Last year’s Futurity Champion, Duane Latimer and Shadd Parkinson were hot on Poplin’s heels. Both riders scored a 220.5.  Latimer was aboard West Coast Shiner (West Coast Whiz x Shining Bubbles) owned by Bob Loomis Quarter Horses, Inc., and Manntana LLC.  Shadd Parkinson rode Spursuasion (Ray Gay Quixote x Mist N Smoke) owned by Debra & Dorn Parkinson.  Poplin and Parkinson are sitting first and second respectively in the Intermediate Open Division.

Corey Hutchings and Chris Dawson are leading the Futurity’s Limited Open Division with scores of 218.5 each.  Corey is riding RU Missin Diamonds (Like A Diamond x Missy Olena) owned by George and Cindy McKinzie.  Chris is riding Shiners Q Nic (Shining Spark/Bueno Q Nic) for Montgomery Lee Petty.

NRHA Cinch Non Pro Futurity

Contestants riding in the Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity had their first opportunity to perform on Friday evening.  Two seasoned Non Pro competitors are leading the way.  Dr. Jim Morgan is sitting at the head of the class on Hesa Friendly by Hesa Smart Chic and out of Seduction. Jim scored a 218.5. Hesa Friendly is a product of NRHA’s Sire & Dam Program. Sally Broten scored a 216 on Dun It By Starlight (Starlights Wrangler x Okie Dokie Dunnit) to finish the day in second place.

Justin Zimmerman is leading the Intermediate Non Pro Division standings with a 214.5 earned on Smart Whiz Lady (Topsail Whiz x Lena Lady Jac) while three riders are tied for second: Scott Fisher riding his own Buenos Wild Child (Bueno Chex Willie x Dixies Wild Child), Sarah Hunt riding Much The Best (Smart Like Juice x Silver Anniversary [AQHA Two T Whisky Royal]) for Hunt Quarter Horses and Tamra Kyle riding KR Tuck N Tejon (Tejons Peppy Doc x Tuck N Lil) owned by Tamra and her husband Pete.

Scott Fisher is leading the Limited Non Pro Division of the Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity with Michael Jeffcoat sitting second on Honey Jacspin (Jacspin x Poco Boss Honey) owned by Michael and his wife Jena.  Honey Jacspin is also a Sire & Dam Program Offspring.
