05.15.02 - DAY TWO at NRHA DERBY - McQuay Leads First Round

National Reining Horse Association Leading All Time Money Earner, Tim McQuay, set the pace for the field at the NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City.

At the halfway mark in Open competition, McQuay’s score of 220.5 on Kid Whiz, owned by Bryan Fox of Altoona, Iowa, is the high score thus far.

Finishing second were former Derby Champion Duane Latimer on Einstein, owned by Pontisso Enterprises, Inc. of Italy and Tom McCutcheon on Sailin Ruf, owned by Giovanni Cioli, also of Italy. Both scored 220.

Topping the day’s slate of Intermediate Open riders was Steve Archer of Richmond, Texas. He rode My Topsail Gal, owned by Katie Forest, also of Richmond, to a 219.5 marking. Just behind with a score of 217.5 was Marco Formentin on Acting Smart, owned by M.R. Langdon & Sons of Benson, North Carolina. Formentin and Acting Smart also topped the field of Limited Open Riders. Finishing second in the Limited Open was Tricia Hamilton on Roll Whiz It, owned by Bob Hamilton of Scottsdale, Arizona.

In $4,000 added NRHA Saddlesmith Non Pro competition held after the completion of the Derby Open first section, multiple NRHA World Champion Bonnie Hippensteel of DeFuniak Springs, Florida emerged victorious in the Non Pro division. She rode The Whiz Master to a score of 219 for the win. Reserve honors went to Lisa Cover of Elizabeth, Colorado on Genuine Shinola.

The $2,000 added Intemediate Non Pro class was held concurrently with the Saddlesmith Non Pro and Suzanne Wilson of Tallahassee, Florida rode Catalyst Command to the win with a 216.5. Reserve Intermediate honors went to Kimberly Wang of Kailua, Hawaii, on Bueno San Lena, with a score of 215.5.
